Teeth Whitening

A big smile says you’re happy and confident. But when you have dull, stained teeth, you may not be smiling as much. One surefire way to perk up your smile is to whiten your teeth. Whether you’re looking for a new job, a new relationship or just want a sparkling smile for that special event, teeth whitening is one of the most popular and cost effective cosmetic dentistry treatments available.

What are the teeth whitening options?

Teeth whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic dentistry services at Sonoran Vista Dentistry. Depending on the amount of dental work you’ve had, your mouth’s sensitivity, your dental health and the color of your teeth, Sonoran Vista Dentistry can suggest appropriate whitening methods:

  • Whitening toothpastes and strips. Including mild abrasives and other agents, these can remove minor surface stains for a quick pick-up.

  • Professional whitening. Usually done in one visit, our dentist will apply a whitening agent to the teeth while shielding the gums to reduce possible irritation. Natural teeth can be immediately whitened.

  • Home whitening. If you prefer to whiten at home, we’ll make custom-fitted whitening trays in which you put a prescription whitening gel. You’ll wear these trays one hour every day until your desired results are achieved, typically two to three weeks.

How successful is teeth whitening?

Stains caused by drinking coffee, tea and soda, using tobacco or improper oral hygiene can often be removed with teeth whitening, but this will only be a temporary fix unless the cause of the staining is corrected. Some things cannot be corrected with teeth whitening. Your teeth will naturally darken over time, and front teeth may become more translucent as we age. Certain medications and illnesses can also cause discoloration. In these cases, you can still have a pearly white smile with cosmetic bonding, veneers and other cosmetic dentistry options.

How does teeth whitening affect dental work?

No teeth whitening option will change the color of cosmetic dentistry treatments, including cosmetic bonding, veneers, crowns, dental implants, bridges and partial dentures. If you’re having any cosmetic dentistry treatments done, we highly recommend a teeth whitening treatment first. It’s best to color match your cosmetic treatments to your teeth when they’re at the desired whiteness.

How long does a teeth whitening treatment last?

How long teeth whitening will last depends on many factors including how well you take care of your teeth and if you’re following up regularly with a home whitening product for regular maintenance. When you come in to our Gilbert office for your regular cleanings, our hygienists will help you keep the sparkle going as long as possible.
